The 1840 edition was the last one that Joseph Smith worked on and is considered by some the most correct edition. This version was reprinted from the third American edition by a publisher in New York, and is known as the "pirated edition" since it violated copyright laws.

This is a facsimile edition with no corrections or formatting adjustments. It was originally scanned by Internet Archive in 2010 with funding from the Indiana Library LSTA Grant.

Book of Mormon: 1920 Restored Edition

Book of Mormon: 1920 Restored Edition
by Joseph Smith Jr.

In 1879 under the direction of John Taylor, Orson Pratt modified the 1830 chapters and added verses to the Book of Mormon. In most cases, except for the Book of Moroni, the chapters were shortened to make them more like the Bible. The verses in the Isaiah chapters in 2 Nephi were modified to match the King James Bible.

In the 1920 restored version, the chapters have been restored back to how they were originally. All 1920 chapter headings and scripture reference have been removed. The only headings remaining are those that were in the original 1830 edition. The modern verses and chapters are indicated in superscript with the chapters crossed out. This will allow the reader to compare 1920 edition with the modern version.

A Book of Commandments 1833
by Joseph Smith Jr.

Printing began in 1832 at a print shop in Independence, Missouri, owned by William W. Phelps. The printing was nearly complete in July 1833 when a mob ransacked the press shop. Several Saints risked their safety to salvage pages during the attack. Members both in Missouri and in Kirtland, Ohio, bound the salvaged pages into a few incomplete books, but the hoped-for release of thousands of copies was thwarted.

History of The Prophet Joseph By His Mother

History of The Prophet Joseph By His Mother
by Lucy Smith, George A. Smith, Elias Smith

Shortly following the death of Joseph Smith in 1844, and into 1845, Lucy Mack Smith dictated her recollections and family story to Nauvoo schoolteacher Martha Jane Coray. Coray worked with her husband to compile these books of notes and other sources into a manuscript, which was then copied. One copy was given to apostle Brigham Young, and the other stayed with Lucy Smith in Nauvoo. Eventually, apostle Orson Pratt obtained Lucy's copy and published it in 1853, to great controversy.

The Life of Nephi, The Son of Lehi

The Life of Nephi, The Son of Lehi
by George Q. Cannon

Nephi (/ˈniːfaɪ/ NEE-fy) is one of the central figures described in the Book of Mormon. He was a son of Lehi, a prophet, founder of the Nephite people, and author of the first two books of the Book of Mormon, First and Second Nephi.

Nephi was the fourth of six sons of Lehi and Sariah. He is believed to have been born in 615 BC. Nephi and his family lived in Jerusalem, circa 600 BC, during the reign of King Zedekiah, until Lehi was commanded by God to take his family and flee into the wilderness. Before their flight, Nephi's father prophesied the impending destruction and captivity of Jerusalem by the armies of Babylon.
